Boarding Services

After much debate, we have decided to begin to board birds to help our rescue efforts. We are members of both the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters, NAPPS, and Pet Sitters International, PSI. We will be sitting for their certification examinations in the near future. We are both bonded and insured too, and we will provide you with that information, if you so desire. We do require that every bird to be boarded with us be vet checked within the last year, or sooner if the bird has been boarded elsewhere. within this last year, to the same standards as the rescues taken in here. We will need the records to be faxed to us at (847) 457-1192 prior to drop off.

For holiday boarding, at least six (6) months advance notice is necessary as we get booked quickly for the holidays. We are aware that these requirements are strict, but with avian medicine where it is, we feel we are providing a level of safety that you will not find elsewhere. If you are unsure what category size your bird falls into, please contact the staff at the Refuge and they will advise you.

  • What happens after I make an appointment? +

If you have been approved and you currently have birds, we need proof of current vet records to include: psittacosis, beak and feather, polyoma, CBC, avian borna virus, avian chemistry panel (including bile acids), fecal, a papilloma check, and a general examination. Please understand that all of our birds have passed testing, which means your birds will be safe around our birds, just as we expect our birds to be safe around your birds.
  • How much does boarding cost? +

See above for boarding pricing. Sometimes there will be extra costs added for special diets, etc.
  • What should I bring when dropping off my bird(s)? +

It is important to us that your bird is comfortable while staying at the Refuge. Please make sure you bring toys for your bird's enrichment, and any other perches or items that will make their temporary housing feel like home. In addition, if your bird has a special diet, bring that food/medication with directions as well.
