Axel has been adopted and went to his new home. Here is a write-up from Axel's new family.
Axel is basically the perfect bird. He acts more like a human, and his favorite thing to do is be around the family. He steps up any time and will tell you if he wants to be scratched by touching his chin with his foot. He is a hearty eater and will eat just about anything off the family's dinner plate; his favorites are almonds, banana, blueberry, and egg. He is sometimes awkward on the hand, and slips occasionally. He loves to play peek-a-boo on the bed, or be followed. Axel also loves hopping all over the floor, or attacking towels.
He over preens, but seems to be very happy. He loves the shower, and will sit on the pole jumping around flapping his wings. He is fascinated by the mirror, and immediately begins jumping with wings spread when in front of one. Axel is still a bit timid of some large objects, and still does a few screams when put into his sleeping cage. Axel is also potty-trained. His favorite things to do inside of his cage is find all the hidden treats and fruits that are hidden for him each day in his foraging toys or wrapped in several layers of paper. He is very smart, and has gotten out of his cage before and found his bag of treats, which he has chewed holes in. The shoulder is his most comfortable place to be, and he loves all members of the family, except for the dog, which he loves to mischievously stalk.
Overall, he's fantastic, and I'm sooo grateful that Rich and Karen picked him for us, I couldn't ask for a better bird. Axel has been my first bird other than a cockatiel, and although I've had tough times with him, it has made me enthusiastic for more parrots in the future!
Axel lived with a young couple who loved him very much and boarded with the Refuge and did well for a number of years. Axel's grandmother became very ill and Axel's parents had to move out of state to care for her. Knowing that Axel would not be able to enjoy the freedom he had grown accustomed to, Axel's parents decided to leave him with the Refuge for placement. This was not an easy decision, but they felt it was in Axel's best interest.
In just a short time Axel was adopted by a family that used to have a goffin's so they naturally fell in love with Axel's antics. Unfortunately for Axel, this did not last and he was returned to the Refuge.
