You Can Help

There are countless ways for you to become involved with homeless parrots. Help support our cause by making a donation or learning how you can become a volunteer!

A Refuge for Saving the Wildlife is a no-kill parrot rescue, rehabilitation, education and adoption shelter. We provide a safe place for parrots that have to be re-homed due to unfortunate situations that sometimes arise. Most of them were loved dearly and cared for, and when that was no longer possible, their companion-people did the most selfless act of kindness in finding them a good home.

We work together with other parrot groups to eliminate the need for rescues. Until then, we will provide temporary housing and care for any and all Psittacine birds (not including those with fatal and/or contagious diseases); educate the public about the proper care of exotic birds; and locate healthy, happy, and nurturing homes for those that are eligible.

The Refuge is established with the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)3 charitable corporation. We are licensed by the Illinois Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Animal Welfare to provide for adoptions. We are also a member of the Society of Animal Welfare Administrators.

Please note: We do NOT handle anything other than PARROTS, if you have found sick/injured wildlife, click here to find a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

Dear Member Society:

With World Animal Week (October 4th-10th) right around the corner, we wanted to invite you to join us in celebrating animals by participating in our "Animals Matter to Me" campaign - the biggest ever global animal welfare initiative linking the entire animal welfare movement under one strategic goal - global recognition that animals are sentient beings, capable of feeling pain and suffering.

Over 1.6 million people have signed the petition, which urges the United Nations to adopt a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW). Our aim is to reach 2 million by the end of 2008, and we can only do that with your help. Please encourage your members to sign the petition and become part of this global effort to improve conditions for animals worldwide. You can also download campaign images and logos for your website.

We would like to thank those member societies who have already endorsed the UDAW. They make an invaluable contribution to the campaign, both by collecting signatures for the petition and by raising awareness of the issues in their local communities. If you haven't already endorsed, we would greatly appreciate your support.
Working with member societies, we have made significant advances in promoting UDAW to the public and persuading governments to support the initiative. Most recently, Colombia's Ministry of Environment has stated official support for the development of a UDAW. This followed a unanimous vote of support from the country's Senate and Ministry of Agriculture in June.

UDAW has also been embraced by the international veterinary community. The 29th World Veterinary Congress saw a resolution in support of a Declaration endorsed by both the World Veterinary Association's (WVA) Council and the President's Assembly. Their statements follow similar resolutions from fellow international bodies -  the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), the Commonwealth Veterinary Association (CVA) and the Federation! of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE). Next month, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) will discuss UDAW at its annual animal welfare committee meeting. We need your support now more than ever!

Please join us in this effort by endorsing the campaign. It only takes a moment, and we will provide a link on both our U.S. and international Animals Matter websites to your organization's homepage. Your endorsement of the UDAW campaign will help facilitate passage of the Declaration and protect animals around the globe.

Thank you for your support!
