Success Stories

Some of our feathered friends come to the Refuge as companions looking to find a true connection, whether human or bird. Read about residents who were welcomed to new homes.

You Can Help

There are countless ways for you to become involved with homeless parrots. Help support our cause by making a donation or learning how you can become a volunteer!

A Refuge for Saving the Wildlife is a no-kill parrot rescue, rehabilitation, education and adoption shelter. We provide a safe place for parrots that have to be re-homed due to unfortunate situations that sometimes arise. Most of them were loved dearly and cared for, and when that was no longer possible, their companion-people did the most selfless act of kindness in finding them a good home.

We work together with other parrot groups to eliminate the need for rescues. Until then, we will provide temporary housing and care for any and all Psittacine birds (not including those with fatal and/or contagious diseases); educate the public about the proper care of exotic birds; and locate healthy, happy, and nurturing homes for those that are eligible.

The Refuge is established with the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)3 charitable corporation. We are licensed by the Illinois Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Animal Welfare to provide for adoptions. We are also a member of the Society of Animal Welfare Administrators.

Please note: We do NOT handle anything other than PARROTS, if you have found sick/injured wildlife, click here to find a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

strut for sigh

The Refuge for Saving the Wildlife, Inc. is hosting a memorial walk for one of our permanent residents, Sigh, a Moluccan Cockatoo, who has recently gone on to the Rainbow Bridge. Sigh came to the refuge in early 2000 when he was in his mid-20’s. He was featherless, fearful and unable to move very well. After years of medicines, therapies and love, Sigh became a very trusting, loving and active bird until his untimely death in 2015.

Come celebrate his life and help raise public awareness about rescued birds and much needed funds to help the brothers and sisters Sigh has left to fill the void from his passing. Sigh will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

The walk will be on Saturday, September 19, 2015 starting at 9:00 am. We will walk through Glencoe and Winnetka for approximately 5 miles. Walk with us: get donors, donate, or just come cheer us on and meet some of the staff and residents. There will be many of Sigh’s feathered friends in the walk assisting to get the word out about the rescue and our mission. For donors raising $25 or more, there will be a one of a kind, stylish t-shirt commemorating the “Struttin’ for Sigh” memorial walk.

If you are planning on bringing your feathered friend with you to the Struttin' for Sigh Walk-a-thon please contact us prior to the walk at (847) 509-1026 or at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to obtain approval. We'd like to make sure all of the birds at the walk have been tested to the same standards, that all of the birds will behave themselves amongst their peers, and that all owners of flighted birds are aware of safety precautions.

If you would like to spread the word or donate yourself please visit our fundraising page for this event.
