Success Stories

Some of our feathered friends come to the Refuge as companions looking to find a true connection, whether human or bird. Read about residents who were welcomed to new homes.

You Can Help

There are countless ways for you to become involved with homeless parrots. Help support our cause by making a donation or learning how you can become a volunteer!

A Refuge for Saving the Wildlife is a no-kill parrot rescue, rehabilitation, education and adoption shelter. We provide a safe place for parrots that have to be re-homed due to unfortunate situations that sometimes arise. Most of them were loved dearly and cared for, and when that was no longer possible, their companion-people did the most selfless act of kindness in finding them a good home.

We work together with other parrot groups to eliminate the need for rescues. Until then, we will provide temporary housing and care for any and all Psittacine birds (not including those with fatal and/or contagious diseases); educate the public about the proper care of exotic birds; and locate healthy, happy, and nurturing homes for those that are eligible.

The Refuge is established with the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)3 charitable corporation. We are licensed by the Illinois Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Animal Welfare to provide for adoptions. We are also a member of the Society of Animal Welfare Administrators.

Please note: We do NOT handle anything other than PARROTS, if you have found sick/injured wildlife, click here to find a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

Celebrate National Pet Day

National Pet Day, April 11, was founded in 2006 by Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert, Animal Welfare Advocate Colleen Paige, to celebrate the joy pets bring to our lives and to create public awareness about the plight of many different kinds of animals awaiting a forever home in shelters and rescues all around the globe. But how do you celebrate a day like this?

  1. Celebrate a Good Cause
This would be a great day to dedicate some of your time to a local shelter in need of volunteers. Contact your local shelters to find out what their current needs may be, and help them out. Share what you did with others to bring awareness to pet adoption and the number of animals living in shelters in need of a home.

  2. Give Your Parrot a Shower
Parrots love getting wet! There are different ways to give your parrot a shower. Smaller birds may like a shallow dish to bathe in. Some birds like to "shower" underneath the faucet while others prefer to be misted with a clean spray bottle of water. With the temperatures getting warmer now is the perfect time for a parrot shower!

  3. Grab a Special Treat
Get a special treat for your parrot. National Pet Day is a chance to spoil your parrot without any guilt. Whether it’s a new package of Nutri-Berries, cooking some pasta, or toasting up bread – this day is a celebration!

  4. Adopt Today
You may decide that National Pet Day is the perfect day for you to adopt that new friend you’ve been wanting.

  5. Spread Some Love
Give some extra love! Only you know the best way to show your parrot you care. Whether it is a longer head scratch, some playful exercise, or simply an extra hug, the best way to celebrate National Pet Day is bonding with your parrot.
