I was volunteering for the Refuge, and was assigned my favorite room, the garage. When I opened the door, I was greeted by the usual din of many cockatoos. This was music to my ears, though others may not feel the same way. On this day, I noticed a NEW cockatoo. This cockatoo was the LARGEST umbrella I had ever seen, and pure snow white. He was sitting in his cage, chewing on a piece of paper, while consuming the perch he was sitting on. As I am fearless of all cockatoos, I opened the door and took him out. I started to pet him, but as I was in charge of the garage, I decided to clean at the same time. I proceeded to clean this bird’s cage, and then walked into the kitchen with him on my arm to get him some fresh water. As I was standing at the sink, waiting to fill the pitcher, another volunteer walked in. She asked me which bird I had out. I looked at the bird, and shrugged, as the piece of paper he was eating previously was the one that had his name on it. I mentioned this to the volunteer, and turned to look at her. It was at this point that I noticed the abject horror on her face! She screamed aloud: “You have Bubba out! Get him away from me! Get him away from the other birds!” I calmly looked at Bubba, then back at her. Bubba was sitting gently on my arm, with no intention of going anywhere. He gave me that innocent cockatoo look, saying with his eyes, “Who me?” That was all it took; I was in love. I roamed around the house until I found Richard. He was shocked when he saw who was on my arm. I learned that this sweet, innocent, and loving creature was actually the devil in disguise! He had previously broken out of his cage, and terrorized the other birds in the rescue. Actually, it went beyond terror. Bubba had seriously injured another bird, Prince. He had torn his lower mandible off. Partially due to everyone’s reaction, and partially due to my heart, I asked Richard if I could adopt Bubba. He said yes immediately. I found myself driving home with a large cage, a new rolling perch, and a charismatic, charming, and fascinating new friend in my truck. When I arrived at home, my other umbrella Skeeter gave Bubba the skeptical eye. It was at this point that I started to wonder if I had lost my mind. Skeeter was my baby. Skeeter and I were bonded in August of 1991; he was my first umbrella. How dare I think to bring another umbrella into his home! What was I thinking? I could read the disgust on Skeeter’s face; additionally, I could read the interest on Bubba’s. What was I going to do? What if Bubba ripped off Skeeter’s beak too? What was I thinking? Well, it just so happens that one day both Skeeter and Bubba were out of their cages at the same time. I do not recall exactly how that had happened, only that it did. Skeeter walked over to Bubba while Bubba walked over to Skeeter. They cautiously eyed one another. The next thing I knew, Bubba was preening Skeeter’s crest feathers. Skeeter loved every minute of it. These two male umbies fell immediately in love with one another and have been close friends ever since. Bubba is a destructive, massive, aggressive and adorable twenty-something umbrella cockatoo. He had an interesting life prior to coming home; the specifics are irrelevant at this point. Most importantly, Bubba has changed his attitude. His aggressiveness has melted away, and he has become as sweet as sugar. His favorite activity is hopping, hence the name, Bubbs-a-Hoppin. When Bubba comes out of his cage, he needs to hop. And hop. And hop. He can hop up to three feet! It starts simply; Bubba will slide out of the hole where his water dish is supposed to be… (OOPS, my mistake! He got out!) Once out, he climbs up to the top of his cage, and the hoppin begins! Back and forth! Up and down! Swinging and laughing, crest erect! Bubba is a hoppin!!! He puts all of his energy, all of his joy, and all of his vigor into the largest hops I have ever seen! He whoops it up, laughing and throwing his crest! He is free to hop, his most favorite activity. Well, cockatoos cannot hop forever, though some would like it if they could. I stand next to his cage, and tap my shoulder. Bubba will come running over, and we take a little walk. We walk together down a short hallway into the bedroom. As with all bedrooms, there is a large bed in the middle. I sit down on the bed, and Bubba hops off my shoulder onto a pillow. I lift the sheet up, and he streaks under the covers, where he commences with his second favorite activity, beak clicking under the sheet. At the same time, I look down at the floor, and low and behold, there is Skeeter! I pick him up, and he too streaks under the covers, to preen and click beaks with Bubba. If given the opportunity, the two of them will stay under there for hours. Sometimes they do; it just depends what I have TIVOed lately. The three of us stay in the bed for hours, preening, clicking, and sleeping. I love my too’s. Needless to say, Bubba has owned me for over five years now. When I come home from work, he gives me the eye, saying without words, “please mommy, let me out so that I can hop and play with Skeet.” As anyone with a rescued bird knows, cockatoos are fantastic eye speakers. I cannot ignore that silent plea to release him so that he can hop with his friend. It is all over for me; cockatoos run my life. Is this what I signed up for when I asked Richard if I could adopt him? You betcha! I cannot imagine my life without Bubba, or Skeeter. I hope that when the time comes, and we pass on to the next plane of existence, we will be in a world where we both communicate in the same language. Until then, we will be a hoppin! He went home on July 8th and we hope to give you an update soon! Update fresh from the press: As I sit here today hanging out with my two newly adopted “babes,” Stash and Nina (our young pup), one of my favorite songs comes on, Hope Now, by Addison Road. So, I decide to do an update on Stash which I promised Richard and Karen a while ago. Every time I hear this song, I am reminded of all the animals out there that somehow find themselves in dire circumstances- some neglected, some abused, without any trace of hope. How terribly sad it is for these special creatures to endure such times of harshness and darkness, and of complete isolation, where love is as remote to them as the moon is to most of us. At the same time though, I think of how these innocent souls reveal to us that not all hope is lost, for in rehabilitation and adoption, they too, like us, can be made new again through mercy, compassion, patience and grace. The main part of the song says, “Everything rides on hope now, everything rides on faith somehow, so when the world has broken me down, your love sets me free” and that is exactly what the Refuge does for these loving creatures, it helps them be free once again and that is a beautiful thing. Two days ago marked the third month of my long-awaited adoption - One that I am absolutely sure would not have been as successful thanks to Karen and Richard’s suggestions and love for this wonderful bird kingdom we are privileged to have. I thank God for people like Karen and Richard. I can’t imagine doing what they do - 24/7 unconditional love for so many birds is something absolutely remarkable, and I am blessed to have come across their path as well as blessed to have come across my loving Too and friend, Stash. So for an update on Stash for those of you at the Refuge who love him to death, here is the latest on how he is doing: A few new ones are, or maybe not so new at all, only blasts from the past, maybe? Who knows...? He blew a kiss at me the other day, but hasn’t done it again. Oh well, at least that’s what I thought I heard. He now asks what? and says 'hola' – of that I’m sure. He loves to dance to the Salsa beat, and he screams out these hilarious tunes I never heard before when he is around children. (I am sure he thinks he sounds very professional!) He now officially barks when he wants to be put to bed, instead of screaming it out. Dogs love him by the way, and he loves them too – of course we keep a close watch on them just in case, but the love is definitely there. Stash also likes to be bathed now on a more regular basis. Our home is a two-story house and he was extremely nervous the first few times we took him upstairs to be bathed, but now he actually looks forward to it. I’ve also been trying different types of foods. He loves Trader Joe’s Gluten & Dairy free homestyle pancakes and their brown rice. He is not a big veggie eater except for corn, which is not the best, I know, but I still let him splurge. Grapes and green apples are his favorite fruit, but his favorite food of all time is definitely scrambled eggs. I have a feeling if I fed him only eggs, he’d never get tired of them, ever! I’d never had a cockatoo before, only Amazons. I’ve learned however that they are completely different, although similar in many ways. The first few weeks with Stash, I thought that taking him from the Refuge wasn’t such a good idea after all. I felt he was miserable with us and missed the Refuge too much. I was also beginning to worry since I am gone two days a week for a long time. Eight hours to be exact. That first day when I left him and came home, I found he had torn an entire two phone books to shreds and filled his cage half way with paper! His cage looked like a paper pool and his little eyes were looking at me as if saying: ‘where were you!!?? I was bored, lonely, aaaaahhhhh!! Even his feathers looked a little frazzled. In my panic, I called Karen, who, thankfully, assured me he did the only thing he knew to do from getting bored, since I had spent the previous four days with him on and off the entire time. Well of course she was right. In time, he has become more comfortable with our routine, and I with him. Richard as well has always been there to reassure me that Stash would be fine; after all, Stash just happens to have been one of his special babes for many years before I ever even came along. Thanks guys! I hope I’m doing a good job. Stash is an amazing being. He is the coolest bird around, and one of the coolest things is that he likes me for me and likes most of my creations. I love making all his toys with paper rolls and boxes and more phone books, and more paper rolls- the possibilities are endless, because it’s what he loves most, cardboard and paper and so, the recycling goes on and on. He’ll let me know which ones he likes and which ones he doesn’t by either ignoring them or absolutely tearing them into a thousand tiny little pieces. So now I know that while I’m gone, he’s going to be either looking for nuts and berries in his prop tunnels and such, or spending some time shredding those phone books he finds so enticing, or spending time inside his beloved boxes; something I don’t think he will ever outgrow or get bored with either. Oh yeah, one of the funniest things is that he shreds all my junk mail, I mean, it’s like having a living shredder or something right out of a Flintstones’ episode in my own home, lol! At first, I really wasn’t sure about getting a cockatoo since I’d never had one, but I’m so happy Karen and Richard thought Stash would fit right in with us. I want to say though that cockatoos are not for everyone. However, if you’ve ever had a big bird, and you like to spend time with them, then a cockatoo might be for you. Toos are also love bugs and if you are like me, someone who likes to chill out with her bird and share some preening, then a Too might be for you. Keep in mind also that unlike cockatiels and the smaller species, they are messier and louder. The screaming, if not curbed, can be quite distracting, annoying and frustrating. It is one of the main reasons they are given up, so please think about it before you decide to get one – you need to commit to them, otherwise you’ll end up being part of the problem as well. If you are anxious about getting a bird like a Macaw, a Cockatoo or even an Amazon or Grey, please take your time in doing so, and don’t adopt one on impulse. Listen to what Karen and Richard have to say and don’t take it for granted, disregard it or get upset if they feel a cockatoo would not be best for you or any type of bird you ‘think’ you might want for that matter. They know these birds, and they know what type of personality will be good for you and who you will be good for also. Remember that you too are a potential match for a bird out there, so wait for each other and the perfect one. Until next time to all you wonderful volunteers, to Karen and Richard (who were meant to be one) to the waiting birds, who have been fortunate and blessed enough to have landed at the Refuge and who are here on earth to make our existence a little less painful and a whole lot brighter, full of wonder, intrigue and love. She loves pasta, apples, and oranges, and being sprayed with an aloe/water mix makes her squeal with joy. We hope to provide updates about her progress soon. Update from Precious's home – December 30, 2008: While I was at the Refuge today, a new bird arrived to join the flock. She is a Moluccan 'too - just a baby. I was looking through her papers and I think, if I'm remembering correctly, her hatch date was in March 2005. Her name is Precious and she was turned in because of a family member's allergies to her dander. She arrived wrapped in a towel, wearing a pink harness. The family brought her cage along, which I'm sure will help make her feel more comfortable during the adjustment to her new surroundings. She is such a sweet bird! She was very scared, and stood motionless on the Java tree for over an hour, just taking everything in. She seems happy to be petted and when Susanna picked her up, she glued herself to Susanna's body. She didn't make a sound the entire time I was there, although I'm sure that will change quickly. She's a small little girl - Rich had originally planned to put her in the garage, for the time being, but when he realized how little she was, he decided she'd probably be more comfortable in the 'too room, instead of with the 'big boys'. It was very sad watching her family say 'goodbye' to her. In fact, I had to leave the room, because I was getting teary-eyed. When I left the rescue tonight, Precious was upstairs spending some quality time with Rich. I'm sure she is going to fit right in with the rest of the flock. For the time being, her cage is right next to the Java tree - you can't miss it. Make sure to stop in and say 'hello'!]]> rae_ou4902vl Mon, 24 May 2021 20:23:46 +0100 https://rescuethebirds.org/services/adopting/success-stories/cockatoos/162-precious.html Paco https://rescuethebirds.org/services/adopting/success-stories/cockatoos/161-paco.html Paco has been adopted! Paco was born in Hawaii and he’s gorgeous enough to belong right in the tropics. He is not a fan of feet – gym shoes are a safer bet – but he loves toys that can be shredded. He also enjoys tearing cardboard boxes apart, and almonds are a preferred treat. Easy listening music seems to calm him down, as does the shelter an un-shredded cardboard box can provide. Paco had been adopted once by a wonderful family who boarded their Blue & Gold Macaw, Reboot at the Refuge. They fell head over heels for Paco and upon their return, adopted him. Almost two years later, their six month baby became very ill. The diagnosis was allergies and they were told to rid their lives of any and all potential allergens to see what may be causing it. They had two dogs, two cats, & two birds. They tried the dogs and the cats first. Placed the birds at a neighbor's house, cleaned the house top to bottom and the baby still had problems. They contacted the Refuge and the suggestion we provided was even more ominous, Bird Keeper's Lung. After a workup with a pulmonologist, the diagnosis was confirmed and it was realized that the birds had to go. So, reluctantly, both birds came to the Refuge. ]]> rae_ou4902vl Mon, 24 May 2021 20:22:40 +0100 https://rescuethebirds.org/services/adopting/success-stories/cockatoos/161-paco.html Muffet https://rescuethebirds.org/services/adopting/success-stories/cockatoos/160-muffet.html Muffet arrived with Bacall, a Congo African Grey, and is an adorable little bird. My name is Fred. I had a great family who loved me very much, but when they were no longer able to care for me, they found the Refuge. When I first came to the Refuge, I was scared and wasn't always very good at socializing with people. One of the volunteers, a teenage girl, took a liking to me and spent a lot of time working with me. We developed quite a bond and because of the time she spent with me, I learned to enjoy spending time with pretty much all the volunteers here at the Refuge. I'm also quite a lady's man and have a Moluccan 'too girlfriend named PJ. I love to spend time with PJ on the Java tree, although sometimes I get a little too excited and preen PJ a little too roughly. Therefore, we're always supervised when we're playing together. I do pluck my feathers so I tend to look a little bit naked sometimes. However, I promise that what I lack in feathers I more than make up for in personality! I'm an avid bather and sometimes the Refuge volunteers have to fill up my water bowl 3 and 4 times each day, due to my frequent baths. In addition to bathing, I enjoy spending time anting. For those of you who haven't witnessed a cockatoo anting, I suggest you come watch me - I'll show you how it's done. I've been known to ant pieces of wood that are bigger than my head! Why not stop by the Refuge and see if you and I hit it off? We may end up being friends for life! I was adopted in November 2014 by one of my favorite volunteers, but she got sick with Bird Keeper's Lung and sadly, can no longer live with birds. My transition back to the Refuge hasn't been too hard on me, since I know many of the nice people here. Hope to meet you soon, Fred ]]> rae_ou4902vl Mon, 24 May 2021 20:09:45 +0100 https://rescuethebirds.org/services/adopting/success-stories/cockatoos/151-fred.html Peaches https://rescuethebirds.org/services/adopting/success-stories/cockatoos/150-peaches.html Peaches returned to the refuge in 2015 after her owner could no longer care for her due to allergies. My name is Jasper but I’m actually a girl. I’m an Umbrella Cockatoo and I am beautiful - if I do say so myself! Plus, my friends at the Refuge always tell me how pretty I am. I am a sweetheart who loves to cuddle. What makes cuddling even better is receiving a good head rub! I do not like other birds and have been known to attack them, so if you would like to adopt me, please make sure that I will be your only bird. I also really love my people… so much so that I may get upset if you come too close to the person I’m spending time with. However, I’m not a one-person bird as I do like to interact with many of the volunteers. Aside from cuddling, I really like shiny stainless steel food and water dishes. They’re very pretty to look at! I recently learned how to tap my beak on the dishes, almost like I’m playing a drum. Who knew what pretty noises those dishes can make?! Speaking of noises, I say “hello” in a very sweet, quiet voice. It actually sounds more like “Helloooo”. While I don’t scream constantly, I am a cockatoo and I do enjoy letting loose on occasion. I can be loud when I want to be. Please be prepared to accept this quality. If you think I may be the bird for you, please contact the Refuge to ask about our adoption procedure. My name is Cookie. I've been told I'm one of the most beautiful cockatoos at the Refuge. My feathers are the purest white you've ever seen. I am a very sociable girl and I LOVE to entertain and be the center of attention. People say I could be a circus bird - I just love performing for anyone who is willing to watch. I also love to talk, which really seems to amuse the humans around me. My ideal home is one with lots of activity and maybe even human teenagers - they fascinate me! If you would like to meet me or hear more about me, please contact the Refuge. I hope to meet you some day! Lots of love, Cookie ]]> rae_ou4902vl Mon, 24 May 2021 20:05:44 +0100 https://rescuethebirds.org/services/adopting/success-stories/cockatoos/148-cookie.html
