Benny
We are very happy to announce Benny was adopted! Benny is a beautiful male cockatiel with a white and yellow head and neck. He has recovered well from being found outdoors. He is very soft and we think he was young when he arrived at the Refuge. He has a dislocated toe, which has been checked twice by the vet and determined not to be a health risk. He likes to sit on top of his cage. His wings are clipped but he can still cover about three feet horizontally. He is shy but tolerant of handling and is a sweet companion.
Here is an update from Benny's new home – December 8, 2008: I wanted to provide you with an update on Benny since he joined our family. Benny seems to be very happy. He sings and tweets quite a bit and does what I like to call "the Benny dance". He loves to crawl up and down his cage when he is singing... which seems rather difficult if I do say so myself.
I have lots of perches and toys in his cage, but he has his favorite spots. Believe it or not, after over a month, he is yet to come out of his cage by himself. I leave the door opened but he just has no interest to explore the outside world. I don't know if that is because he is still unsure or if he just likes being inside.
As for eating... he definitely is NOT picky. He eats everything... toast, cereal, pellets, Exact Fruit flavored, and of course millet on occasion. There's no lack of appetite in this bird. He's eating all the time.
So far, I have yet to be able to handle him. He will sit right outside his cage by me but when I go to try and get him on my finger or take him out, he nips and runs away. I stay by him all the time and talk to him, but I still don't think he is trusting enough to come to me. I hope one day I can earn his trust. He scratches his head with his foot all the time and all I can think is that I should be doing that instead of him! Hopefully time will be on my side.
I've attached a couple of pictures of him in his cage. They were taken a couple days after his arrival. As you can see, it looks quite comfortable.
